The Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Athletic Counseling at Springfield College is a 32-credit hour in-person program designed for those who already have a graduate degree in psychology, counseling, or related field and wish to complete specific education and training in working with athletes. The CAGS in Athletic Counseling program will prepare students for the Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) credential offered through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). Students may need to complete coursework and supervised experiences post-graduation if CMPC requirements are not completed within their curriculum. The CMPC credential is not conferred by the program and is under the purview of AASP.
There are over 30 classes to choose from to complete the required credit hours including courses in psychology, counseling, and applied exercise science. Research-related coursework can also be applied to this Certificate and students have the opportunity to enroll in fieldwork or an internship which allows them to work with sport teams on and off Springfield's campus.
